Kathmandu Wins Over $5 Million in First Month of Operation!

Nepal's capital city Kathmandu won more than $5 million during its first month of operation as a smart city, officials said.

Officials at the Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) said the city had generated over 9.7 billion Nepalese rupees (over $96 million) in revenue from January to March this year.

"The city has so far collected 9.7 billion Nepali rupees as revenues from January to March 2019," KMC Chief Appointment Officer Tilak Bahadur KC told Xinhua on Wednesday.

"Of the total revenue, 8.5 billion Nepali rupees was generated from taxes while 1.2 billion Nepali rupees was received as service charges," he said.

The city started operating as a smart city on January 15, 2019 with a view to offer better services to its residents and make Kathmandu a world-class metropolis.

Kathmandu has introduced various initiatives under the smart city program such as online payment of taxes, issuance of Building Occupancy Certificate (BOC) and construction permits, and online collection of water bills among others.

Under the program, KMC also plans to install 1,000 surveillance cameras across the city to keep track of incidents and crime prevention.
